Begin as a Business Development Entry-Level Professional

 

Working as an entry-level business development representative typically involves calling and emailing prospective clients and attempting to pique their interest in the company. Each employee characteristically must reach a quota each month or each quarter, which shows upper management how valuable each employee’s skills are. If successful in this position, a Business Development Representative could move on to be a Customer Service Representative, a Direct Sales Representative, or even move on to a marketing position.

 

Advance to a Manager

 

If an employee is successful in any of the lower-level positions within the company, advancing to a Business Development Manager is usually the next step. In this management position, an individual typically directly supervises entry-level employees and assists with the timeline of the sales chain. They are expected to lead their team to reach each quota every month and to assist with the development of lower-level employees. They focus on ensuring the success of their team as a whole.

 

Advance to Leadership

 

With any business development team, leaders are needed to assist with transitions within the company, ensuring quotas are being met and assisting managers when expectations are not up to par, and advising employees on various levels. These leadership positions often do not directly supervise anyone, however, they are involved in a lot of the important decision-making regarding internal and external forces.

 

It can be difficult to maintain motivation to be successful throughout a business development career path. It often takes time to advance from an entry-level position to a manager or leadership position. However, staying focused on your career goals and making strategic decisions along the way can help an employee qualify for the next level position.
